Speaker Biography

Dr. Ralph Ford is the director of the School of Engineering at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. He obtained his B.S. degree from Clarkson University and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Arizona. He was a senior associate engineer at IBM Microlectronics Division in East Fishkill, NY from 1989-1991. He joined the faculty at Penn State Behrend in 1994 and then served as chair of electrical and computer engineering for eight years. He was selected as director of the Penn State Behrend School of Engineering in 2005. The School of Engineering has increased its national visibility as reflected in its ranking as one of the top 50 undergraduate engineering schools in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. Dr. Ford was a Fulbright Scholar to the Czech Republic in 2005, where he taught and conducted research at Brno University of Technology. He is author of the book, Design for Electrical and Computer Engineers. In 2009 he became Director-Elect of Region 2 of IEEE.

DeVry University IEEE Student Branch will hold its annual S-PAC (Student Professional Awareness Conference) on Thursday June 10, 2010 in the rear Commons Area at the main campus of DeVry University in Columbus. The event is free for all IEEE members ($5.00 for non-members and guests). A certificate for one PDH (Professional Development Hour) will be awarded if requested with RSVP. Space is limited and on a first come-first served basis. Please RSVP to attend.

Topic:
Managing to Mange Your Career

From the time you enter college until you retire, the choices you make will help determine the direction of your career. Mr. Paserba will explain the importance of identifying and making choices with respect to such areas as getting your career started, goal setting and career-path planning, developing technical and non-technical skills, and professional society involvement. This talk is filled with serious practical steps you can use now, and as you start your career, presented in a fun and interactive way, and includes numerous anecdotes based on the speaker’s personal experience as an engineer.

Speaker:
John Paserba joined Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Inc, (MEPPI) Power Systems Division in December 1998, and is presently the MEPPI Product Line Manager in the Medium Voltage Circuit Breaker Department. He was the Manager of the Power Systems Engineering Services Department from 2002-2007. Mr. Paserba began his career with General Electric’s Power Systems Energy Consulting Department in August 1988.

John Paserba is a Fellow Member of IEEE and was the Chair for the IEEE PES Power System Dynamic Performance Committee and presently serves on the PES Governing Board as the Vice-President of PES Meetings Activities. He was also the Chairman and Secretary of the IEEE PES Power System Stability Subcommittee for over 5 years. He has sat on the Editorial Board of the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems and is currently on the editorial board of the IEEE PES Magazine “Power & Energy,” where he was the Guest Editor for the September/October 2004 and 2006 issues.
