Title: Volt Var Control Technology being applied on AEP Operating Company Distribution Systems

Abstract: This presentation will discuss the Volt Var Control Technology being applied on AEP Operating Company Distribution Systems to optimize voltage, reduce customer consumption and improve power factor. The discussion will include the basic concepts of Volt Var Control (VVC), an update of the applications across the AEP System, results from theoretical modeling and initial measurements of actual performance on 11 circuits, and a summary of our findings so far.

Presenter: Tom Weaver – Manager, Grid Management Deployment

Tom Weaver has been with American Electric Power (AEP) for 33 years. His first 23 years were at Kentucky Power Company where he worked in T&D Engineering, Metering, Communications, Customer Services, and Line Supervision positions.

In 2000 he transferred to the AEP Service Corporation in the Distribution Planning function. He is currently Manager, Distribution System Planning with responsibility for System Planning, Network Planning and Engineering, and Grid Management Deployment.

He has been actively involved in developing and applying deployment plans for gridSMART Technologies on the AEP distribution system since 2005.
Tom is a Registered Professional Engineer in Kentucky with a BSEE from West Virginia University and a Masters in Business Administration from Morehead State University.
Tom is also active with EPRI as Utility Chair of the Smart Distribution Applications Program and EEI as Chair of the Planning, Design, and Asset Optimization Working Group.
Tom and his wife, Glenna, live in Pickerington, OH. Their three daughters are married and live in Kentucky
