Title: "An Engineer Without Boundaries"

Abstract: This program discusses why engineers should not blindly accept design work without determining who has the authority to require such a design and what codes and standards control the design. It can be a matter of life or death.

Presenter: D. Bruce Larcomb, P.E., P.S., FSFPE
Bruce Larcomb, has been involved with building and fire safety for over forty years. His experience with the insurance industry, state fire marshal, code development associations, state building authority and consulting gives him a unique perspective on the subject of code enforcement relating to building and fire safety. He is particularly proud of his grade of fellow with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers. Bruce currently serves as the OSPE President.
He also serves as consultant for the review of candidates applying to take the PE, PS and EI exams offered by the Ohio Board of Registration for Professional Engineers and Surveyors.
In recent years he has provided expert services on a number of legal cases.

AEP gridSMART Distribution Optimization Deployment – Moving Beyond Pilot Projects

29 Mar 2011 - 6:00pm
29 Mar 2011 - 7:00pm

Abstract: The AEP Ohio gridSMART Demonstration Project is being deployed to 110,000 customers in a 150 square mile area representing urban and rural residential communities in central Ohio. AEP has deployed advanced technologies to operate the grid more efficiently by integrating a broad range of advanced technologies on the distribution grid, utility back office, and consumer programs to comprehensively demonstrate smart grid impacts. This presentation takes a closer look at the high-level design, deployment plans and challenges, along with lessons learned as a result of deploying large-scale gridSMART technologies such as Distribution Management System (DMS), Volt-VAR Optimization, including two-way wireless Network communications and Distribution Substations and Circuit devices. Distribution Optimization using Volt/VAR advanced technologies utilizes an advanced DMS application software and substation based controller to collect and analyze data from monitoring points on distribution circuits and issue commands to voltage regulating devices and capacitors in order to tighten the voltage profile, operate in the lower portion of the acceptable voltage range and control power factor close to unity. The presentation will assist Utilities with the planning and deployment of advanced technologies. A few discussion points that this presentation covers include: 1) Stable and reliable communications are a must. 2) Interoperability of the solution with multi-vendor and legacy equipment is a must. 2) There is a balancing act between frequency of device operations and the tightness of volt/VAR control. 4) Flexibility in the system for modifications to the topology of the circuits.
